Safety & privacy.
Reflection can bring you close to hard places. Magnolia is built to notice when that happens, to point you toward real help, and to keep what you write yours alone.
Being My Best is not a crisis service and not clinical care. If you are in immediate danger, please call or text 988 in the U.S., or see the crisis resources below.
How Magnolia responds to distress
She watches for distress
Every message you send is read for signs of distress before Magnolia answers. That reading happens on our side, never in your browser, and it happens on every turn — not only at the start of a session.
Four levels
We sort what we hear into four levels. They are not labels about you; they are instructions to Magnolia about how to hold the moment.
- Ordinary. Nothing concerning. Magnolia works the way she always does — slowly, curiously, staying with what matters to you.
- Distress. Hopelessness, worthlessness, deep isolation, grief, shame, the sense that nothing you do matters. She stays with you here — this is much of what reflective work is for. If it keeps returning within one conversation, she slows down, offers something grounding, and quietly points to support without treating the moment as an emergency.
- Elevated. Passive thoughts of not being here, self-harm language without a plan, the sense that others would be better off without you, disordered eating, escalating substance use. Magnolia names plainly what she is hearing instead of reflecting it back or drawing you further into it, asks about your safety directly and only once, and a banner appears with 988 and Crisis Text Line for the rest of the conversation.
- Acute. Intent, a plan, means, a timeline, an attempt underway, or intent to harm someone else. Magnolia stops the reflective conversation entirely. She says plainly that this is beyond what she can hold, and hands off to a panel with 988 and 911 as tap-to-dial links. That conversation is closed; you can begin a new one whenever you're ready.
Escalation means resources, not reporting
When Magnolia escalates, she points you toward 988 and Crisis Text Line. That is all it means. Nobody on our side is notified, no email is sent, and no one is contacted on your behalf. We keep only an anonymous record that a level was reached and when — no name, no account, no text, not even an excerpt.
Why she stops going deeper
Our approach deliberately moves toward the feeling underneath the reactive one, and toward the beliefs sitting under a pattern. That is useful work on an ordinary day and the wrong move in an acute one. Deepening at the wrong moment can pull someone further into a place they need help stepping back from.
So at the elevated and acute levels Magnolia suspends all of it — the deepening, the language of parts, the Adlerian interpretation. She stays concrete, present, and plain instead. It reads as a change in her voice, and it is deliberate.
What this is not
This layer is careful, not clinical. It cannot see your face, hear your voice, or know your history. It will sometimes be more cautious than needed, and it can miss things a person in the room would catch. It is not monitoring, not diagnosis, and not a substitute for licensed professional counseling or crisis care.

After the moment passes
When you're ready for slower, reflective work, you might return to Being My Best or read about our approach. None of it replaces a relationship with a licensed therapist.
How we handle what you write
Being My Best is built around the assumption that what you write here is private. Here is exactly how we protect it.
Account-scoped data
Sessions, journals, and check-ins are written to your account and protected by database-level row security. Other users — and curious engineers — cannot read your data.
What we never do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not train public AI models on your reflections.
- We do not share your conversations with advertisers.
What we collect
The minimum required to operate the service: your email address, the content you write into sessions and journals, and basic technical logs used to keep the service stable.
Crisis and safety
